York in 48 Hours: A Leave-Free Weekend Add-On in the UK

Let’s talk about York – an English city brimming with history, charm, and enough things to see and do to fill a weekend.

Want to know how to make the most of just 48 hours in this fascinating city in the North of England? Read on to explore how we maximized our own 2 day trip to York.

By arriving early on a Saturday and flying home on Sunday, I didn’t even need to take a vacation day from my “day job”.

If you don’t live in Europe like I do, I think you’ll find that York is a convenient add-on to a business trip to London. Let’s go!

Day 1: Immersing Yourself in Medieval York

On the first day of this weekend city break, we’ll focused on York’s Medieval history.

Morning

Start by climbing the York City Walls for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Gaze out over the rooftops, taking in the sights of both modest homes and grand architecture.

You might even spot the Ferris wheel, a fun addition to York’s skyline! Keep an eye out for charming street lamps along the bridge as you cross the river towards York Castle.

Afternoon

Time travel back to the Victorian era at the York Castle Museum. Picture this: you’re strolling down a recreated Victorian street, complete with shops and homes. As day turns to night (in the exhibit, of course!), you can almost hear the gas lamps flickering!

Don’t miss the fascinating exhibits on everything from indoor plumbing (did you know Thomas Crapper, the inventor of the modern toilet, was from this area?!) to the history of York Castle as a prison.

Evening

Get lost in the magic of York’s medieval core, a labyrinth of cobbled streets and half-timbered buildings. Grab a pint like we did at one of the historic pubs like The Three Tuns or indulging in a hearty meal at Gert and Henrys.

Their Yorkshire Pudding with roast beef is a regional specialty and comes highly recommended – the cheesy cauliflower is pretty amazing too!

Day 2: Cathedrals, Coffee, and a Bit of Trainspotting

On second day of our trip to York, we visited an eclectic mix of sites.

Morning

A visit to York wouldn’t be complete without marveling at the grandeur of York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Before you head inside, take a relaxing stroll through the York Museum Gardens – keep an eye out for old church ruins peeking through the foliage.

Inside York Minster, you’ll be awestruck by the towering ceilings, intricate stained glass (including the largest medieval stained glass window in the world!), and an array of statues with quirky expressions.

Afternoon

Treat yourself to a sweet treat and a cup of coffee at Betty’s Cafe Tea Rooms, a York institution. Then, journey into the world of locomotives at the National Railway Museum, conveniently located in the York Train Station.

The museum is free to enter but don’t be surprised if the curators encourage a donation. Wander through the vintage train carriages, from the simple third-class seats to the luxurious first-class compartments, complete with fancy upholstery and private toilets!

You can even see the inner workings of a steam locomotive – I won’t judge you if you want to nerd out.

Evening

Conclude your York adventure with drinks and dinner. Try Kapadokya, a Turkish restaurant with delicious food and prime people-watching opportunities (it’s across from a lively 1980s-themed nightclub…)

And there you have it – a jam-packed, itinerary for a weekend break in York, England! Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a charming escape, York has something for everyone. So go ahead, book that train ticket, and get ready for a memorable adventure!
