Is Lake Iseo Worth Visiting on a Day Trip from Bergamo?

Living our expat life in Europe for the last 15 years has given us the wonderful opportunity to go deeper on our travels than we otherwise would have. For example, a flight from Dublin to Bergamo is a most excellent gateway to a Ryanair weekend city break in Italy.

Bergamo itself has a ton to offer but the city is also conveniently close to the Italian Lakes (e.g., Lake Como, Lake Garda).

Lake Iseo is the nearest lake to Bergamo (about a 40-minute drive to Sarnico). In contrast, the drive from Bergamo to Lake Como takes about 2 hours by car.

Taking the Bus from Bergamo to Tavernola

We started our day trip to Lake Iseo, Italy on the bus from Città Bassa in Bergamo to Tavernola, about an hour-and-a-half ride. Tavernola is a sleepy little town on Lake Iseo.

As we waited for the ferry to embark on the next stage of our journey, we took a quiet stroll along the serene Italian lake.

Cruise past Monte Isola on Lake Iseo

Riding the ferry, we cruised on Lake Iseo past Monte Isola, the largest island in a lake in not only Italy but in Southern and Central Europe.

We didn’t have time to stop off and explore, but circumnavigating the island, we saw some of the major features including a castle tower on the island’s peak.

Riding the Ferry to Iseo Town

Cruising on from Monte Isola, we soon arrived in Iseo Town, the town named after the lake (or is the lake named after the town? I think we have a chicken-and-egg problem).

Lovely cafés dot the waters of Lake Iseo. We dined al fresco at Lido dei Platani on pizza, fresh seafood, and a bottle of local red wine. A perfect afternoon on the Italian Lakes!

Our whirlwind day trip on Lake Iseo concluded with a train ride from Iseo to Brescia, a town dotted with charming Roman ruins often standing side by side with modern-day architecture.

As the sun set, we hopped on a train in Brescia back to Bergamo amazed at the amount of ground we covered across the Italian lakes district in just a single day.

Is Lake Iseo Worth Visiting?

So what’s the verdict? Is Lake Iseo worth visiting? While many tourists flock to Lake Como, Lake Iseo is actually the nearest lake to Bergamo (about a 40-minute drive), making it an ideal candidate for a day trip.

Here is why I think Lake Iseo is definitely worth visiting, based on our experience exploring the area:

on public transportation:

It’s relatively easy to get around on public transportation. We started our journey by taking a bus from Bergamo to Tavernola and then hopped on a ferry and cruised past Monte Isola to Iseo Town. We concluded our day trip adventure in the Italian Lakes district with train rides to Brescia and then back to Bergamo.
Idyllic food options: Upon arriving in Iseo Town, we found lovely cafes dotting the waters. We dined al fresco at Lido dei Platani, indulging in pizza and fresh seafood washed down with a bottle of local red wine. It was a perfect afternoon on the Italian Lakes!
Easy connections to Roman history: We extended our day trip by taking the train from Iseo to Brescia. Brescia is a town dotted with charming Roman ruins that often stand side by side with modern-day architecture.
